TPO 34- A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first European to see one. In 1768 the animal became extinct. The reasons for the extinction are not clear. Here are three theories about the main cause of the extinction.
The reading and lecture are both about Stellar sea cow found in Bering Island. The author states three theories to support the cause of the extinction of the sea cow. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that the cause of decline of the population of sea cow was due to overhunting by native Siberian tribes. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that sea cow was a massive creature that is 9 meters long and weight 10 tons. Furthermore, he argues that a couple of sea cow can feed the tribe for months. In addition, the population of the Siberian community is small, so they are not the culprit for the extinction of the sea cow.
Secondly, the author contends that sea cow become extinct due to ecosystem disturbance which resulted in the decline of their main food source kelp. The article establishes that kelp cannot adapt to the ecological changes in the Bering island. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that the ecosystem disturbance will affect all the species in the environment such as whale. Moreover, he elaborates on this by mentioning that the population of whale did not dropped and fishing ship did not report decline in the number of whale in the Bering Island. In addition, kelp plant was growing fine and sea cow did not experience food shortage.
Finally, the author states that the European fur traders who came to the island and hunted the last sea cow in 1796. The article denotes that European traders had high caliber weapons that can easily kill large number of animals. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that when the European traders arrived the population of sea cow was already small. The largest population of sea cow was before 1700's and the serious decline in the population of sea cow happened before the European arrived.
