The reading passage talks about how humpback whales are navigating by the stars when migrating. To begin with, the writer suggests that humpback whales have a high degree of complexity, which indicates they have higher intelligence compared to other animals. Their cognitive ability provide them the knowledge of using stars for orientation. This, however, is refuted by the speaker by using duck as an example of an animal that is with an average cognitive ability is also using stars to navigate using their instinct. That is, there is no necessarily a connection between overall intelligence and the ability to utilize night sky orientation. Moreover, the author argues that it is impossible for animals to maintain their movement in a straight direction for long distances, therefore, humpback whales need to rely on stars to for migrating since they have no land features to refer to in an ocean. Quite contrary to the second suggestion raised by the writer, the listening material contends that the magnetic field is what navigate the humpback whales due to their special biomagnetic system. Lastly, the speaker refutes the point brought up by the reading material that the purpose of humpback whales exhibit spy-hopping is groundless because although this behavior is rare, shark is one of the animals that perform spy-hopping but looking for food instead of navigating by stars. In addition, humpback whales still spy hop throughout the day when is no star can be seen in the sky.
