The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The graph compares how many goods the four different types of transport could carry in the UK from 1974 to 2002. Overall, the quantities of items transported by the four modes increased as a whole in the twenty-eight years.
Starting with 1974, road was the most popular transport mode among the four, delivering the goods of nearly 70 million tonnes. Rail and water transmitted the similar number of goods (around 40 million tonnes). Pipeline played the smallest part in carrying products—just around 5 million tonnes.
Turning now to the period of twenty-eight years, the quantities of goods transported by road, water, and pipeline showed an upward trend, arriving at approximately 100, 65, and 23 million tonnes respectively by 2002. In contrast, meanwhile, the amount of commodities by rail fluctuated slightly. It remained stable until 1978, when it began to decline and in 1995 fell to the lowest point at approximately 25 million tonnes. Then, it rose to around 41 million tonnes in 2002.
