An investigation into SFL students'needs of studying cultures of Asean countries.
Studying culture and language will promote an individual to become open-minded. Learning about other cultures and their development, which would be impossible to understand by simply reading the pieces of news, literature or anything else will allow the individual to see and appreciate it. The relationship between language and culture is deeply rooted. Language is used to maintain and convey culture and cultural ties. Thus, Brown (1994:165) describes the relation between language and culture as follows: 'A language is a part of a culture and a culture is a part of a language; the two are intricately interwoven so that one cannot separate the two without losing the significance of either language or culture'. This is due to the fact that language has a dual character: both as a means of communication and a carrier of cultural identity. Language without culture is unthinkable, so is human culture without language. A particular language is a mirror of a particular culture as it is mentioned from Wei (2005:56). This seems to suggest that raising the learners' awareness of studying culture is likely a way to direct towards priority
