mock test 02
The reading and listening materials have a debate on the methods to help bats fight white nose syndrome. The writer puts forward three suggestions, which are contradicted by the following lecture.
Firstly, the writer claims that people should stop visiting the caves which the bats sleep in. However, the speaker casts doubt on this opinion by saying that people are not the biggest factor in spreading the disease. The fungus spreads from cave to cave mainly by bats. Moreover, bats in the cave that human has not visited before also got infected. As a result, people staying away from the caves will not have a large effect.
Secondly, the author argues that people should research a bat species which can resist the fungus, while the lecture views this issue from an opposite angle. According to the professor, the resistance of fungus is a complex biological adaptation which may take decades for researchers to find out. But the progress of disease is so rapid that it can make the bats die out within ten years. So, this suggestion cannot provide practical help.
Thirdly, the passage states that people can heat the caves to prevent the fungus from spreading and infecting the bats. By contrast, in accordance with the professor, this claim does not hold water. It is because the raising of the temperature will destroy the whole cycle of bats and make the situation get worse. After the cave is warmed up, bats will regard it as summer and be unable to sleep. Consequently, bats will also wake up in winter and starve to death.
To sum up, the professor totally refutes the author’s statement. And better suggestion is needed for bats to fight white nose syndrome.
