Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasonsLow GravityTo begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier for the spacecraft to take off again, so the spaceship would need to carry considerably less fuel for the trip back to Earth.Mining Valuable MetalsNext some asteroids are rich in valuable elements and precious metals that are relatively rare on Earth, such as gold and platinum. An asteroid colony would be extremely profitable and a good source of these raw materials. The colonists or businesses sponsoring them could more than pay for the cost of their support by mining minerals and sending them back to Earth.Easy to ReachFinally, asteroids are a good option for colonization because some of them would be very easy to reach. There are a number of asteroids that periodically come within or near Earth's orbit Some of them actually get closer to Earth than our Moon. So these asteroids would be much easier and more affordable to get to and get back from than a planet like Mars, which would require a two-year trip in each direction..
The text and the lecture offer two opposing views on asteroid colonization. While the text suggests that colonizing asteroids is a better option than establishing colonies in other planets, the professor casts doubts on all the specific points presented in the reading. The professor is of the opinion that asteroid colonization is not as practical as suggested by the author.
First of all, the professor argues that low gravity can cause health risks to humans. In the lecture, he states that although low gravity can, indeed, make landing and taking off easier, it also has negative effects on human health. He elaborates on this by mentioning that astronauts on missions to Mars experienced loss of both muscle mass and bone density due to low gravity. Therefore, the long-term effect of a low gravity environment on colonies of humans might be worse.
Secondly, while asteroids might be rich in metals and raw materials, the lecturer states that the author of the passage is not taking into account the whole picture. The professor contends that the author ignores the cost of supporting a colony and transporting material back and forth from asteroids.. Furthermore, there is not guarantee that the price of the metals would remain the same. If the mining on asteroids create a greater supply of minerals and precious metals then that means that market price would eventually decrease. After all, the price depends on the available supply and demand.
Finally, asteroids do not provide an easy way to return to Earth. According to the professor, the orbital path of asteroids is unusual and unpredictable. Asteroids could get close to Earth but then travel far away, even further than Mars. The lecturer argues that although reaching asteroids might be easier than travelling to Mars, a problem still remains. It would be a challenge to return to Earth if the astereoid moves too far away from our planet.
