The table chart presents the proportion of consumer spending on three items by five European countries in 2002. Overall, the expenditure on food, drinks and tobacco is significantly higher than the other two categories in all five countries.
Food, drinks and tobacco consumption accounts for an average 20% of total spending, with Turkey and Ireland about one third and a least 16% in Italy, Spain and Sweden.
Expenditure on clothes and shoes covered approximately 6 per cent, a much lower consumption than food and drinks. Although Italy spent the most among the five countries in question, the proportion only made up under 10%. Sweden, in particular, saw a minimum of 5.4% spending on clothing and footwear.
In contrast, all five countries allocated less than 5% of their expense on entertainment and education. Expenditure on these items in Spain and Ireland was a minimal 1.98% and 2.21% respectively, and a similar proportion of 3.2% was shared by Italy and Sweden. The maximum spending in this category was by Turkey, 4.35%, still a much smaller proportion than the former two categories.
