In the set of material, both the reading and listening talk about the possible causes of decline sea otters. The reading claims that the environmental pollution and attack by predators are the reasons for decline sea otters. However, the lecturer refutes each of the points suggested in the reading passage.
First, the passage asserts that, the increased the level of chemicals in water induced the infection in sea otters and caused the rate of sea otters population down. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this point by logical thinking, if the chemical pollution caused the Alaskan coast polluted, then other than sea otters and entire ecosystem and all fish could have been infected and caused to death or endangered.
Secondly, the article posits that the entire ecosystem affected and were caused to declined because of environmental pollution. The orca, a large sea predatory whale is exception to this as they prefer to hunt larger prey. On the other hand, the lecturer points out that the whales disappeared because of the human and whales have changed their diet.
Finally, the reading says that, the otters populations declined rapidly in Alaskan region while at other locations they remained stable. So, the reading suggested that the ocean currents or other environmental factors have created uneven pattern of population along the coast. On the contrary, the lecturer argues this hypothesis, otters population have not declined in shallow, rocky regions and thus, uneven pattern of otters exist due to the location.
In conclusion, the lecturer casts doubt on all the claims and hypothesis presented by the author in the passage.
