The following appears in a letter to the editor for the West Lansburg News:
"The tufted groundhog lives in the coastal wetlands of West Lansburg. Ancient records suggest that the tufted groundhog once numbered in the millions. Since they were declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2004, development along the coastal wetlands has been prohibited. Now local development interests are lobbying for the West Lansburg council to allow an access road to be built along the edge of wetlands. Neighboring Eastern Carpenteria, which had a similar sanctuary, has seen its sea otter population decline since the repeal of its sanctuary status in 1978. In order to preserve the region's biodiversity and ensure a healthy environment, the West Lansburg council should not allow the road to be built."
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
The author in the given letter addressed to the editor is of the view that allowing construction activities along the edge of the wetlands would be a threat to the tufted groundhogs living in the sanctuary. Possibly the authors analysis is correct but it needs more specific evidence to bolster its view and convince the council to void the construction.
It has been pointed out that the groundhog's population in the historic times was once in millions. It would be best if an evidence could be provided that it was due to human interference that their population saw an decrease until the wetlands were declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 2004 and which ultimately lead to a positive impact on the groundhog community.
The author mentions one similar instance of Eastern Carpenteria, where the sanctuary status was repealed which lead to a decline in the sea otter population in the area. However, it has not been clearly mentioned if the cause of the decrease was humans, climatic conditions or other environmental or health related issues. Moreover, the sanctuary status being repealed could have lead to hunting or poaching activities. It is not mentioned in the letter that the Wetland's sanctuary status would be changed, so such an impact could be improbable.
The author also needs to evaluate the consequences of not building a link road along the edge of the wetands. It might be possible that it is essential for the council for the economic prospects and public interest. Hence due consideration needs to be put on that matter.
Thus, providing the aforementioned evidences would strengthen the authors argument and take the council into its confidence to not allow the road construction along the edge of the wetlands and hence save the area's biodiversity.
