Both the lecture an the passage are regarding whether the memoir of Chevalier is accurate or not. Albeit the author strongly emphasizes that indeed memoir is not precise, lecturer refutes this claim by presenting several counterarguments.
Firstly, the author accentuates that in fact he was not as wealthy as he indicated in his memoir because recently, evidence emerged concerning the amount of money he borrowed from Swiss merchant. Thus, the author deems that a person who is wealthy does not need to borrow money. However, the lecturer contradicts this statement by asserting that Chevalier had to convert his money to the cash, and it too long for the cash to arrive, so Chevalier borrowed some money for gambling until his money arrived.
Secondly, the author mentions that critics are also very skeptical concerning the accuracy of conversations between Chevalier and prominent writer Voltaire. Even though the author has no doubt that they met each other, he is not convinced regarding the precision of the dialogues, for it is not feasible that Chevalier can not recall all sentences he had long before. That being said, the lecturer rebuts this claim by demonstrating proof. The lecturer accentuates that Chevalier used to write his conversations with Voltaire instantly after finishing, so it is quite plausible that he exactly remembered each sentence.
Thirdly, the author states that Chevalier escaped the prison by giving bribe rather than by utilizing a piece of metal to make hole in the ceiling and climbing through the roof. Besides, Chevalier had a decent connection with political figures, so he may get help from them. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes this opinion by posting that they were some people in the prison who had more powerful connections, but unlike Chevalier they couldn't escape. In addition to it, document was found, which displayed that after the escape of Chevalier ceiling had to be mend, so if Chevalier used bribery for escaping, why the ceiling in the court of Chevalier had to be repaired.
