The reading and the lecture are both contradicting with each other, in term of extinction of the living organism at the end of the Triassic period. The author of the article provides some possible explanations which may illustrate the mass extinction of living organisms. However, the lecturer casts on doubt about the claim mentioned in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the passage. He says that the presented ideas are not practical and logical.
First of all, according to the reading, it may be possible that the extinction has occurred due to fluctuation in the sea level, and because of those habitats of the ocean population could not survive in the harsh condition. On the contrary, the speaker negates the arguments presented in the passage. Furthermore, he discusses that it is true that the fluctuation took place at the sea level, but it is not a good explanation since it happened over a long period of time. On the other side, the extinction took place suddenly, so, this theory has nothing to do with the extinction of the living species at that time.
Secondly, the author posits that extinction has occurred because of temperature cooling. The volcanic activity releases the sulfuric dioxide into the atmosphere which leads to decreases in the temperature. Although the lecturer refutes this by asserting that it is true that sulfuric dioxide causes climate cooling, but that effect cannot the reason for animal extinction. As she explains that the excess sulfuric dioxide will be eliminated from the atmosphere by combining it with water and falling on the earth in the form of the rain.
Finally, it is mentioned in the article that asteroid strike may be the possible explanation for the extinction. On the other hand, the speaker believes that
scientists do not agree with the explanation because there was no crater found at that period. Although there was one crater has been detected, but after studied that, it showed that it must have happened many years earlier than the extinction has occurred which is not a convincing theory as well.
