The reading and the lecture are both contradicting with each other, in a term of danger spreading by a fungus called Phytophthora ramorum to the forests in the western states. The author of the reading presented three theories about how to protect the forest from this fungus. However, the lecturer casts doubt about the claim mentioned in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the article. She says that the ideas are not effective and practical.
First of all, according to the reading, an effective method to stop spreading fungus is to encourage the hikers to wash their shoes and installing new bike scrubbers on their bicycle trails because this fungus is mainly spread through shoes and cycle tires. On the contrary, the speaker negates the argument presented in the passage. Furthermore, he discusses the fungus that it can be spread through the rainwater to the river stream which may help the fungus to spread in a long distance and that way it would be hard to get a control on the infection.
Secondly, the author posits that the fungus can be prevented with the use of fungicidal chemicals which need to inject in the oak trees. Although the lecturer refutes this by asserting, the presented method will work only if the chemical will be injected directly to the tree trunk and there are thousands of trees infected from this fungus. Thus, it would be costly to treat all the infected trees.
Finally, it is mentioned in the article that disease can be removed by cutting down all the infected trees in the forest. On the other hand, the speaker believes that since not all the trees are infected, we may lose the healthy trees if we would cut down all the oak treed in the forest. As a result, some serious ecologic damage might occur which may be greater than the damage which is carried out by the infected fungus to those trees.
