COMICS
The author of article claims that comic books are a purely American art form;On the other hand, the lecturer considers this to ba a fallacy, because it is based on incorrect information
To begin with, the writer states that the first commercially succesful comic strip- Hogan’s Alley- presented the first well-known character, and that it was american in every way. The lecturer refutes this by explaining that it was not the first comic book; A comic published at the end of the eighteenth century in Europe had been succesful earlier than Hogan’s Alley.
Second of all, the writer argues that the first popular comic- superman from action comics- was in all views american. Although, this idea cannot be considered correct having in mind that: first of all, there had been another series of superhero comics before as stated by the lecturer; and secondly, that the cartoon artist of superman was actually Canadian.
Finally, the author supports its arguments appealing to the authority of scholars; he says that they have recognized comic as a chiefly american art form. To counter that, the lecturer claims that the information is outdated, for intellectuals have gone further into the subject and found that comics were actually influenced by other countries besides the U.S. For instance, most art historians state manga, which the writer claims has been massively influenced by americans, was mostly created based on old Japanese art culture.
In conclusion, It cannot be truthfully stated that comics are an uniquely american art form, for ,as stated by the lecturer, they have had roots in other countries as well. Illustrated with: the existence of an earlier commercially succesful comic in europe, the fact that series of comics- namely superhero’s- have had popularity in other countries before the U.S, and the new knowledge of contemporary scholars.
