The reading and lecture both discuss the ways that could help to stop the Zebra mussel population. While the reading states that it is so hard to stop the zebra mussel invasion, the professor refutes, saying none of theses claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading states that the previous invasion of zebra mussel explain that it impossible to stop it. This is because zebra mussel could attach to the ships button and spread to North America. However, the professor refutes this notion by saying that in the past, people could not stop this invasion because they did not have any knowledge . In fact, they can stop the ships to spread the zebra to new location. Moreover, they can fill these ships with ocean water. So, the ocean salt will kill the zebra mussel. As a result, these mussel will not be able to spreed to North America.
In addition, the article avers that we can not stop the zebra invasion because they will spreed so fast due to the high reproduction rate, and they do not have any predators. On the other hand, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that the zebra mussel can spreed in the beginning in to Europe, but the birds over there will recognize that there is a new habitat for them. So, the birds will eat the zebra mussel.
Lastly, the reading mentions that the zebra mussel are very risky for the fresh fish population because they eat plankton. In addition, plankton is considered the main source of food for these fresh fish. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by explaining that these mussel became dominant and had a negative influence of fresh fish, but they have positive impact on other population. For instance, they will be the main source of food for other population. for example, the fish that live in the button of the lake. So, the fresh fish population will increased.
