The reading and lecture both discuss the possible explanation of little ice age formation. While the reading provides three ideas to explain the little ice age formation, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading avers that the disruption od ocean currents caused the ice age foration. This is because it provides a lot of fresh water into Gulf Stream. So, the climate became more cooler. However, the professor questions this notion by saying that the disruption of Gulf Stream had cooling effect only at Europe and North American. However, at other places like Nizoland this disruption of Gulf Stream could not explain why these areas became cooler.
In addition, the volcanic eruption could provide the air with high amount of dust that blocked the sunlight. As a result. the climate temperature decreaed. On the other hand, the professor contradicts this point by explaining that the volcanic disruption added enough dust to cause cooloing in temperature. Also, it should produce visible effect. For example, in the past, people could see colorful sunrise or colorful snow like blue or brown. However, there was not any report that confirm that happened. So, this volcanic was not strong enough to produce dust.
Lastly, the article mentions that the decrease of human population was the casue behind this ice age formation because the forest trees left it behind without any vegetation. Consequently, this decreased the green house effect. Nevertheless, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that the human population increased again and the forest was not empety for a long time. So, they started to work on cutting the forest again to feed the population. As a result, the forest could not have enough time to cause coolong effect.
