Hail—pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain—has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States. Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field. Over the last few decades, a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding," has been tried. In cloud seeding, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on storm clouds from an airplane This makes the clouds produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. Several pieces of evidence suggest that cloud seeding has been effective in protecting crops from hail.
The reading states adequate pieces of evidence which have proved cloud seeding is an effective method for preventing hail formation by spraying silver iodide from an airplane in the storm clouds. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on reasons proposed by the reading passage.
First, the author argues that by adding silver iodide, light snow was formed rather than hail pallets. In other words, since cloud seeding method was successful under laboratory condition, it might also have fruitful results in real situations. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that silver iodide added up to clouds might stop all kinds of raining and precipitations and lead to drought in those areas. Therefore this reason is not convincing due to the shortage of water which crops will face.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that as seed clouding has been effective in urban parts of Asia, it also might be helpful in the United States' farms. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that since urban areas have a high amount of pollutant particles which provide a good condition for functioning cloud seeding, it would not be practical in unpolluted regions such as United States' farms.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that according to some local studies which carried out in farming regions, cloud seeding has a noticeable effect on reducing crop damages. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that this declining in damage not only have occurred in areas under experiment but also happened in adjacent areas which no cloud seeding has been utilized. Thus this decreasing in the amount of crops damage is irrelevant to cloud seeding and might be due to some essential alteration in local weather.
