The reading and the lecture are both about the effectiveness of a four-day week working policy, which less amount of working days than current work days. The author of the reading feels that a four-day week plan will place positive effects on our society. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author in the article. He is of the opinion that the policy has more downsides rather than upsides for the country.
To begin with, the author argues that working four-day week will dramatically increase the company's revenue. The author mentions that if companies accept the new policy, they could save more money to using labor since the worker will be more effective in their work. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the new policy will fail to increase the company's profit. Because, in the given situation of a four-day week policy, the company will pay more money for training employee and buying new computers. Additionally, the company will use more budget to guarantee an employee's medical care.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the rate of employment will decline. In the article, it is said that the company will be able to hire more employees to compensate for reduced working time. The lecturer, however, rebuts this idea mentioning that the possibility of the company hiring more employees is quite low because the company will require more intensive laboring to workers rather than hire more workers. As a result of this action, the total rate of employment will decrease.
Finally, the author posits that the citizen's life quality will be improved by the new policy. Moreover, he says that the less working time of the new policy will give more free time to the worker can enjoy leisure. In contrast, the lecturer's position on the opposite side. He notes that reducing working time will decrease the total income of a worker eventually. Even worse, as workers who working less will lose the chance of promotion.
