The reading and the listening are both about R.Robustus which is not an active hunter rather scavenger. The author of the reading believes that there are 3 possible explanations regarding the issue of hunting. The Lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. She is of the opinion that R.robustus is an agile/vigorous hunter.
First of all, the author suggests that the size of r.robustus was similar to a cat which was way more smaller than the psittacosaurs. It is mentioned that due to this size difference the mammal(r.robustus) is would have been unable to successfully devour dinosaurs. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the remains which were found could be a residue of a baby dinosaur. Furthermore, she argues that R.robustus mass could be more than twice of its hunted animals which is a condition of preying.
Secondly, the writer contends that the leg size and oddity of position indicates its inability to chase after prey. The article notes that the dinosaur found on the stomach was too fast to capture. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that Tasmanian devil, which size and leg position are almost analogous to r.robustus.She elaborates on this by mentioning that it’s average running speed is up to 15km/h and which is quite fast.
Finally, it is stated in the article that while hunting and eating an animal by another animal, normally there exist teeth marks on the bones of the hunted animals. The author establishes that the bones which were found on the stomach don’t have any teeth mark on it and the founded animal on the stomach could be a small psittacosaur, came from an unguarded egg. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it could use powerful jaws for grabbing and holding an animal. She puts forth the idea that there is no evidence of back teeth of r.robustus, hence it could swallow an entire animal or into big pieces.
