Altruism is a type of behavior in which an animal sacrifices its own interest for that of another animal or group of animals.
The text and the lecture offer two opposing views about altruism in animals. While the reading passage lists reasons to substantiate the existence of altruistic attributes among animals, the professor repudiates all the reasons given based on a recent research, elucidating that some times reexamining a scientific belief leads to scientists' opinion alteration.
First, the article posits that the meerkat which guards others will remain hungry, and this is an example of sacrifice. On the contrary, the lecturer asserts that a new study, which scrutinized meerkats closely, manifests that a meerkat will stand as a guard only after eating enough food. Thus, a guard meerkat is not abiding hunger to protect other members, thereby not showing an altruistic behaviour.
Next, the author claims that a guard meerkat, by calling other members, in the case of an approaching predator, jeopardizes its own life. In contrast, the professor refutes this assertion, and states that the guard animal has the outstanding opportunity to escape before other members of the group because it realizes the predator's presence prior to them.
Additionally, when a guard alarms the members, they will assemble, and thereby distract the predator's attention from the guard itself, and thus, the guard can flee to the burrows immediately, leaving other members alone with the predator. For these reasons assuming prey alarming as an altruistic behaviour is not precise.
Finally, the passage declares that some human behaviours like sharing foods or donating body organs are illustrations of altruism. On the other hand, the lecturer counters this argument by explaining that a human being who donates a part of his body, such as a kidney, does not perform so without any reward. According to the professor, the appreciation that the donor receives from the receiver and the society should be taken in account as some kinds of remuneration. Therefore, a human being cannot be counted as an accurate instance of animals which show altruistic behaviours.
