The article discuss that the Renoake settlers did not disappear but instead they relocated providing three reasons of support. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that it is still a mystery and she says that the point of the author is weak and easily dismiss, opposing each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading says that when White returned he found the word Croatoan carved onto a piece of wood. On the contrary, the professor says that this make no sense. She explains that the governor instructed the settlers to go toward the interior of the island to avoid more problems and to have more food there. She says that it is hard to believe that settlers went against governor’s orders.
Second, the author claims that many English artifacts have been found on Croatian supporting the idea that the settlers from Renoake simply relocated to the Island. However, the lecturer explains that there is no way that the artifacts proved that. Artifacts could have been made in their way to Croatoa to trait.
Third, the article says that when search parties arrived on the Croatoan Island they did not found anything but the indigenous there possessed European characteristics . On the contrary, the lecturer says these characteristics could come from a marriage between an English and a Croatoan or from English who came later. Those characteristic could come from any of those groups but not from the Roanoke.
