The reading and the lecture are both about whether dinosaurs were endotherms or not. The author of the reading passage feels that there are some evidences supporting that dinosaurs were endotherms. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author of the reading passage. She is of the opinion that these evidences are not sufficient to prove that they were endotherms.
To begin with, the author argues that dinosaur fossils were found in polar regions. The article mentions that only endotherms can endure such conditions in cold climates. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that if they lived in the polar regions, polar region was much warmer than it is today. Additionally, she says that even animals that are not endotherms could live in such conditions in warm seasons, with hibernating and migrating in cold seasons.
Secondly, the writer suggests that endothermy allows sustained physical activity, such as running, while legs of animals are positioned underneath their body. In the article, it is said that the legs of modern endotherms are underneath their body, proving that dinosaurs were endotherms. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that physical activities such as running only requires high energy in animal body. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the leg position of the dinosaurs was connected with their size which allowed them to grow in large size for better performance in life.
Finally, the author posits that there is also connection between endothermy and bone structure, which include in endotherms Haversian canals. Moreover, it is stated in the article that these canals house nerves and blood vessels that allow the living animal to grow quickly, and rapid body growth is a characteristic of endotherm. In contrast, the position of the lecturer is that although dinosaurs had dense Haversian canals, they do not prove that these are characteristic of endotherms because of the growing things. She notes that these structures allowed them a periodic growth; rapid growth, slow growth, and no growth prove that this is not a characteristic of endotherms in dinosaurs.
