The article introduces the topic of genetic modification to enhance trees. More specifically, the writer declares that this approach will lead to growing more vegetation in a short time. The lecturer in the listening passage disagrees. She believes that although there are some benefits in this modification, it is costly and has serious problems.
In the reading, the author begins by stating that genetic modification makes the trees stronger for surviving than unchanged once. The lecturer, however, disagrees. She argues that the plants which genetically modified are much uniform, and as a result, if there is an incompatible environmental condition, all the trees will be destroyed entirely.
The author also claims that genetically modified trees provide some beneficial infrastructures for economic growth. Again, the lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer's argument. The speaker holds that there will be some hidden cost in this method. In fact, there is a policy in which for each newly planted tree, the farmers are obliged to pay to the government.
Another reason why the author asserts that genetic modification promise to bring a vast number of benefits is that it will inhibit the over-exploit of wild trees to respond to high demands for firewood and construction timber. The professor in the listening passage is doubtful that this is accurate. He states that planting the genetically modified trees though the natural once, it gives rise to become out of competition for requirement resources. Moreover, it will bring more destruction to the natural environment.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about genetic modification. It is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
