The issue both the reading and the listening focus on is the cause of the decline in the population of the yellow cedar. However, the listening opposes the reading at three main points.
At the first point, the reading states that the insect parasites, in this case they are are beetles, may cause the yellow-cedar decline. According to the listening, almost healthy yellow cedar trees have very powerful substance on their bark which is poisonous to insects. Therefore, beetles only can have an effect on weak trees, thus they are not the fundamental cause of the yellow cedar decline.
At the second point, the reading mentions that the decrease in the yellow cedar population can be attributed to brown bears. On the contrary, the professor points out that although the brown bears actually have a bad effect on yellow cedar trees but it is only on the mainland. In fact, the decline also happens on the islands, where there is no appearance of the brown bear. Consequently, the brown bear cannot be responsible for the decline of the yellow cedar population.
At the third point, the reading show a hypothesis that the decline of yellow cedar can be the result of gradual changes of climate. The listening rebuts this hypothesis. The professor presents a fact that the decline in the cold and high-elevation areas is more than the warm and lower-elevation areas. Therefore, the changes of climates do not play a role in the decline of yellow cedar.
