The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the limitation of the archaeological studies of British artifacts. The passage mentions three reasons to support that the traces of British artifacts is difficult. The lecturer, on the other hand, categorically denies all three reasons and explains the new guideline enactment that has improved the problems of the passage.
First, the passage discusses that although the builders notice valuable sites while constructing, they do nothing to preserve them. The lecturer, on the contrary, denies the idea, citing that based on the new regulations, no construction can be embarked on except when a professional expert analyzes and evaluate s the site of construction in order to make sure that no sign of ancient artifact is detected. Accordingly, if they see any signs that proves to be ancient artifacts or sites, they will gather together so as to meticulously collect all artifacts before preceding the construction.
Second, while the reading claims that the amount of the fund received from government is too limited that only a few archaeological artifacts can be thoroughly investigated, the lecture denies this idea citing that according to the new policies, the construction agencies are in charge of paying the required fund to complete the research which in turn, helps the researchers to have a comprehensive investigation which wasn’t possible before.
Eventually, the reading believes that finding related job for archaeologists is an arduous task and it is restricted only to universities. However, the lecturer refuses this fact and highlights the notion based on the new rules, a plenty amount of job positions are needed so as to process the sites, preserve the artifacts and present this findings via articles and reports. Thus, more and more professional archaeologists are required in Britain compared to the past.
