Sinosauropteryx
Both the author and the lecturer discuss whether Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur or not. The passage claims that Sinosauropteryx did not have feathers. The professor, on the other hand, finds the assertion mentioned in the reading unconvincing and weak through citing three reasons.
First, both the author and the professor talk about decomposition. According to the passage, after the animal died and buried in volcanic ash, its skin may have decomposed into fibers, which is shown as lines in the fossil, and these lines were misinterpreted as evidence of feathers. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that other animal’s fossils that are buried in ash have not shown such decomposition. In other words, the animal was preserved in volcanic ash and decomposition did not occur after the animal died and was buried.
Second of all, both the reading and the lecture discuss existence of frill. The author argues that many dinosaurs had frill and the lines surrounding the skeleton are much more likely to be fossilized remains of frills than remains of feathers. However, the professor refutes this, saying that the feathers are made up of keratin while the frills do not have keratin in its structure. The fossils paleontologist found do not contain keratin, so the lines cannot show the remains of frills.
Eventually, the passage and the lecture address the subject of feather’s functions. The passage goes on to mention that the feathers were useless to help the animal to regulate its internal temperature or fly. In contrast, the professor points out that thermoregulation can be other application of feather. For example, peacock has colorful feathers that attract its mate. Recently, paleontologist have found that Sinosauropteryx had colorful feathers that could be used for display.
