The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. Second, the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. Cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Young toads and cane toad eggs are even easier to gather and destroy, since they are restricted to the water. If the Australian government were to organize a campaign among Australian citizens to join forces to destroy the toads, the collective effort might stop the toad from spreading.
Third, researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus will be specially designed: although it will be able to infect a number of reptile and amphibian species, it will not harm most of the infected species; it will specifically harm only the cane toads. The virus will control the population of cane toads by preventing them from maturing and reproducing.
The passage is discussing three methods to stop the further spread of cane toad in Australia. The lecturer, on the other hand, believes that none of the mentioned tactics is successful and might cause environmental catastrophes in the long run.
First, although a fence was effective to stop rabbits from spreading in the beginning of the twentieth century, this method would not stop cane toad from spreading. This fact shows that constructing a national fence would be unlikely to stop cane toads from spreading.
Second, even though cane toads can be easily captured and destroyed by volunteers, other species might be destroyed as well. This is because native frogs, who live alongside with cane toads look similar. Thus, volunteers won’t have the ability to distinguish between them, and end up killing native frogs instead of cane toads. This could cause detrimental effect to the environment.
Finally, it is true that researchers have developed a virus that will harm specifically the cane toads by preventing them from growing and reproducing, but it will infect other reptiles who usually are transferred to Central and South America. These reptiles will transmit the virus to the cane toads in both locations where native cane toads live. This solution is not feasible because it would disrupt the eco-system there.
