The line graph compares the amounts of goods transported in million tonnes in the United Kingdom from time period 1974 to 2002 by four different means of transport. It is clearly seen that overall the road is far more popular means than others for transporting goods over these 28 years.
In year 1974, 70 million tonnes goods were transported via road then with fluctuations over years, to end at much higher number nearly 100 million tonnes in 2002. The pipeline was least used mode over all these years. It started at around 5 million tonnes and rose steadily to end at 22 million tonnes in 2002.
The water and rail used to transport equal tonnes of goods around 40 millions from 1974 to 1978, however the dramatic difference was seen over the next years till 2002. The water become the second popular means of transport while railways ranked third in position. After year 1978, rapid increase in use of water was seen unto 1982 which then remained steady at that level till 1988. After that it again rose steeply to reach to 70 million tonnes around the same level which was beginning point of road in 1974.
The amount of goods transported by rail decreased steeply in years from 1978 to 1985. With slight increase in its popularity between 1986 to 1994, though with small fall in year 1995, it showed increasing trends to finish at 40 million tonnes transported by it.
In conclusion, road was the most popular means of transport throughout all these years and the pipeline was the least popular. The use of water for transporting goods increased fairly by 30 million tonnes. The rail lost its popularity for some years but towards 2002 it regained its original point that was 40 million tonnes. Overall the transportation by all means have increased but via rail it remained the same.
