In 1939, David O Selznick produced a film of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Gone with the Wind. The movie proved to be among the most important in the history of world cinema. To this day, in fact, it remains the American box office champion when adjusted for inflation. In 1940, the film won a record-breaking eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Recently, however, Gone with the Wind has increasingly come under fire due to allegations of racism in the movie. Consequently, its reputation has fallen in many critical circles.
The film tells the story of a Southern family who fight on the side of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Scarlett O’Hara, the main character, is a slave owner whose civilization goes to war to preserve the right to own and degrade African Americans. Life before the Civil War, during the days of slavery, is depicted as a golden age.
Scarlett’s maid and confidante, Mammy, is not even given a first name in the script. Meanwhile, Butterfly McQueen, who portrayed Prissy, a house servant whom Scarlett slaps across the face at one point in the film, was told by the director to deliver a hysterical performance emphasizing the character’s dim-wittedness, speaking to age-old negative stereotypes. Civil rights activist Malcolm X wrote of his embarrassment seeing Butterfly McQueen’s performance as Prissy that it made him want to crawl under the rug of the theater.
For all of these reasons, when watching Gone with the Wind today, modern viewers cannot help but feel admiration for how far the movie industry has come since its infancy. There is much to be embarrassed about in the early days of Hollywood films.
The reading section and the lecture have a varied opinion about the movie, Gone with the wind. The reading calls the movie racist and points out a few examples supporting it whereas the professor loves and appreciates the movie for the wonderful performance by the artists.
Firstly, it is mentioned in the reading that the movie talks about the war from white's perspective and life before war and days of slavery are depicted as a golden age while the professor appreciates the film for timeless romance and feminist theme. The professor says that nowhere in the movie the time before war is romanticized. Also, the professor says that the life of women changed for better and they had more opportunities after war.
Secondly, the reading is not happy with the fact that Mammy was not given her first name in the movie while the professor says that Mammy was the smartest character in the film and she was unafraid and protective for her loved ones.
Finally, in the reading, it is mentioned that the performance of McQueen as Prissy wasn't an embarrassment where she rebels against the owner. The professor says that the director wanted to add hysterical comedy but McQueen added rebellious character. Even then she appreciates both characters, Mammy and Prissy and states that their performance was appreciated and they won awards for it. Furthermore, it paved the way for future generations to work in Hollywood which wasn't the case earlier.
Therefore, the reading section considers the movie, Gone with the Wind as an embarrassment whereas the professor supports and praises the movie and the casts' performance stating the examples of awards and says that it has made it easier for African Americans to find jobs in Hollywood.
