TPO 15

Both of the provided materials are discussing the pros and cons related to the cane toads elimination in Australia. The reading suggests some practical ways of dealing with this new threat. The lecturer, on the other hand, explains how these proposed schemas are prone to be unsuccessful and refutes each of the author's points.

First, the reading mentions that building a national fence may turn out useful since the one established to prevent intrusion of rabbits earlier proved to be so. However, the professor contends this point by stating that many of young toads and eggs can travel via stream of water. Thus, with the lands rife with rivers and a fence that cannot stop the flow of water, the eggs can move along and form a population across the fence. Therefore, the cane toads are still prospering exactly where they are not supposed to.

Second, the passage proposes another technique, which is to use volunteers to catch the harmful toads. Nonetheless, the lecturer disputes this method as well by saying that inept trainees could not distinguish between cane toads and the Australian native frogs. Therefore, by mistake, they put that species in danger of extinction.

Third, the reading avers that using a recently developed virus might happen to be helpful in this issue. The professor opposes this point by saying that the virus can be more harmful than the article claims. She mentions a consequence of this practice and its unexpected impact on cane toads in central America. She explains since researchers and pet keepers happen to travel around the world carrying animals from Australia, it is likely for the artificial virus to transfer to other places like America. Thus, this virus jeopardizes the lives of the cane toad native to America. This can be destructive since cane toads are still useful there.
