The article states that a new policy to allow employee to have four-day week will lead to a overall improvement in socio-economic condition as well as respective company and individual who will adopt that policy. The article provides three reason to support this policy. However, The Professor explains that new policy will not be beneficial to society at all. He refutes each of the author opinion.
First, the article claims that letting employee to take four-day week will increase company profits. The professor refutes this point by saying that this policy will instead cause company to spend more money on employees. The professor states that though individual empolyee is taking less money for four-day week, hiring more empolyee to support the work load will be expensive. Company not only required to pay salary to employee but also Health insurance and other service for employee is beared by company. So more employee means more Health Insurance cost as well as incresed cost to support accommodation for large employee group. In this way the professor denies the article logic that the new policy will make company benefitted.
Second, The article posits that new policy will create more job opportunity. However, the professor says that this policy will fail to create more job opportunity. The professor explains, if the company ask employee to make overtime instead of hiring new people then the policy will not be able to create more job. The professor also give support to his idea by saying that if the company have increase their expectation on employee that a worker will do the same amount of work in four days like the worker who work five-day week; In that case this policy will make work environment unpleasant.
Finally, The Professor opposes to the article point that this policy will improve individuals quality of life by saying that the policy will risk the employees job stability. In time of financial crisis the four-day week empoyee will be terminated first because of theri low involvement with company. The possiblity of poromotion will decrease. While empoyee are more likely to spend more time with family they will face a hard time to learn new things for their career advancement. As a result the proposition of the reading that employee quality of life will be increased by the policy will be greatly undermined.
