The detailed description about crime will affect the people and cause many social problems. Some people say that the media should be strictly restricted. Do you agree or disagree?
The descriptive explanation about crime is a topic with a few contradicting viewpoints. Some people believe that too much publicity about criminal acts would have negative impact on communities. In a closer examination of this problem, I am convinced that mass media should be restricted. Following are further discussions of such an opinion.
To begin with, the first supportive factor for the issue is that excessive exposure to criminal behaviors in detail can leave negative influences on children’s personality forming process. This is to say, children or adolescents basically are immature and lack of life experiences to distinguish what is right or wrong, therefore, when facing problems they might imitate unconsciously wrongdoings they have seen on TV. As a result, they would be more violent and aggressive or even worse become lawbreakers.
Another worth mentioning point is that media can offer opportunities for potential criminals to be more skillful and dangerous. It means, intended law offenders might learn tricks and avoid the mistakes made by arrested ones, consequently, the danger level of crimes will be higher and law enforcement have to put more efforts to deal with these law violators. An illustration for this point can be seen in the fact that a person who intend to break into a bank or jewelry store can easily access to plenty of tips with detailed explanation by watching criminal reports on TV or the Internet.
To view from a different perspective, some people would hold that thanks to news broadcasted by media, people’s awareness about self -protection would be raised. This is partly true, as media can provide citizens with essential knowledge and skills to deal with popular criminal acts, individuals will obtain more experience and know how to react in case they are in such unpredictable situations.
In conclusion, the above mentioned discussions have lead to a confirmation that publicity about crime reports should be censored carefully to reduce social problems. Although this is not an easy task, governments should implement some policies to media about crime to ensure that citizens are safe as well as crime rates would decrease.
