The line graph illustrates the amount of smoke and of sulphur dioxide which was present in the air in London between 1600 and 2000.
These two polluting gases had a similar trend over the years, even though the amount of sulphur dioxide was always higher than the smoke one.
The levels grew almost constantly with a relevant fluctuation from 1600 to 18500 when they reached their peak. In that year the micrograms of sulphur dioxide each cubic meter were nearly 1000. Probably the main reason were the emissions caused by the industrial revolution.
As for smoke its level was worrying at the beginning of the 20th century with slightly less than 500 micrograms per cubic metre.
Lucky both of the harmful gases faced an important decease in the last 50 years, obtaining the surprising result of having nearly zero emissions in the year 2000.
