The reading passage states that the commercial fossil extraction by private collectors is not helpful for both scientists and public. The lecturer counters this by saying that the advantages of commercial fossil extraction outweighs its disadvantages.
To begin with, the text mentions that because the fossils are sold to private collectors they are not available for common public to witness. Moreover, this can create a situation where the public might lose interest in fossils. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees to this statement. She thinks that because of commercial fossil extraction, general public will have a much greater exposure. What’s more, as lot of fossils are sold to private collectors they will be available for economically low level institutes and other organizations to display them.
Secondly, the article states that most of the scientists will not get access to these fossils and this way some potentially important information will be lost that could have led to important discoveries. On the contrary, the lecturer completely refutes to this by saying that no information will be lost due to the commercial extraction of fossils. Because, in order to decide the price of a fossil it has to be identified scientifically and this can only happen by passing through the scientific community.
Finally, the author of the reading passage alludes that the commercial fossil collectors might destroy the valuable scientific information and evidences in the quest of extracting them. In addition, they are not trained to carry out the careful field work. However, the lecturer argues that if not for the private collectors most of the fossils would not have been discovered at all. Because, the government and institutions are not wealthy enough to carry out all of the fossil extraction.
