TOEFL integrated writing: work a four-day week.

The reading and lecture are both about effects of lowering the number of working days per week from 5 day’s a week to 4 day’s a week. The author of the reading feels that decreasing the number or working days will benefit individual and the country in a whole. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He says that offering employees to work for 4 days won’t have any effect on individual and country, because this will force companies spending more money on hiring and training new employees.

First, the author argues that working a smaller number of days per week will increase profits for the company. The article mentions that working few numbers of days will benefit the company, because all the employees will feel rested and will be alert during working, lowering the number of errors during work. This specific article is challenged by lecturer. He claims that lowering number of days will increase the staff size to complete the same work, as similar work of 5 day. Additionally, He states that increase in number of employees will result in increase of expenditure by the company.

Secondly, the writer suggests following this strategy will help decrease unemployment rates. In the article it is said reducing working time for an individual, will increase the employee base to get the stipulated work done by another employee. The lecturer, however rebuts this by mentioning that there will be no decrease in unemployment rates because the company will spend more money to hire new employee. He elaborates on this, by mentioning up the point that it will also increase companies’ expectation and stress on employees that the work needs to get done in 4 days instead of 5 in a weak.

Finally, the author posits that the bond between employee and family members will enlighten. Moreover, in the article it is mentioned that less working days will increase family time, also if someone wants to pursue private interest. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that it will ham his career and stability of job.
