Torreya taxifolia, a type of evergreen tree
The passage offers three different proposals for scientists to protect Torreya taxifolia from going extinct. However, the lecturer claims that none of the three solutions is effective in reestablishing this endangered tree species.
First, the passage proposes to reestablish Torreya in its original habitat, where its population was steady. This particular region in the north of Florida has a microclimate which differs from that of the region surrounding it. The wet and cool microclimate enabled Torreya to flourish. However, the lecturer points out that the microclimate in this region has experienced a change and can no longer provide Torreya with the coolest and dampest climate ideal for its growth. Two main factors contribute to this change: the global warming, which makes the area less cool than in the past and the wetland drained, which makes the area dryer than before.
Second, the passage comes up with the proposal that the tree can be moved to another remote region where Torreya might have thrived long time ago. Some scientists believe that by doing so, they are helping Torreya to settle back in an area with more suitable living conditions. But according to the lecturer, by citing the example of another tree called the black locus tree, reestablishing a tree species in another region can threaten the existence of other species and provoke the extinction of other species. Indeed, Torreya may thrive and its population may spread quickly, but other trees, especially those that are also endangered, may suffer because of this new invader. Thus, the outcome would be unpredictable.
Third, the passage suggests that Torreya can be preserved in research centres, where the seeds and saplings can be kept carefully. Torreya trees are better protected to ensure their survival. However, the lecturer refutes this idea by stating that keeping Torreya in human-monitored centers can eventually make these trees unable to resist diseases, since in order to resist disease, two conditions must be met: the tree must be in a large population, and the tree must be genetically diverse. The research centres can not meet either condition, which may gradually result in the trees' incapability of survival in the long term.
