The reading passage and the lecture both are about increasing the salinity of inland lank in California. The author of the passage feels that there are three possible ways to reduce the salinity of lake. The lecturer challenges each of the points made by the author. He is of the opinion that these solutions are not feasible.
To begin with, the author argues that the level of salt can be controlled by desalination. The article mentions that evaporating the water would leave the salt and minerals behind and the water steam can again be condensed into liquid. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that desalination will cause many hazardous effects on both the environment and the ecosystem. Additionally, he says that desalination leaves toxic substances behind, which can be distributed in the environment either by the wind or another medium. This can cause dangerous effects on people.
Secondly, the author feels that diluting the lake water with ocean's can reduce the level of salinity. In the article it is said that water from pacific ocean can be mixed with the lake water through piplelines or canals.The lecturer rebuts the point by mentioning the cost of piplines and canal construction. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that distance between the pacific shore and the lake is more than 1000 km and it would be very expensive for govt to construct these.
Finally, the author posits that salt level can be reduced by making walls in the lake. Moreover, it is stated in the article that walls will divide the lake area, into different parts. A small part of the lake would be the part where salinity can be increased and the salt level will be controlled in the main part. However, the lecturer counters the point by saying that the area is not geologically stable. Additionally, he says that an earthquake can destroy all the walls and mix up the whole lake water again. Therefore, this idea is also not feasible.
