Problem of elevating the level of salt in the Salton Sea in California and its solutions are discussed both in the passage and lecture. The passage gives three solutions to the problem and the lecturer mostly disagrees with them.
Firstly, in the passage the solution of removing the salt from the lake in a direct way by desalination facilities in mentioned. Lecturer disagrees and believes that, however, this will return the salt-free water to the sea, the chemicals which is left behind is a threat to the environment's health.
Second solution concerns reducing the level of the salt in the sea by means conveying water from ocean to the lake since it is 20 percent less salty. Lecturer refutes this idea and states that it is a pretty expensive solution to apply as the water should be transferred from too far away through pipelines and canals.
And finally the last solution proposed by the passage relates to the act of separating the lake into several sections and performing salinity reduction in the main and largest section using freshwater from small rivers. In the lecture, on the other hand, this solution is known to be not effective since the site might go through some natural accidents, like earthquakes, and destroy the wall eventually.
