The author of the reading states that dams represent the most beneficial and effective forms of electricity creation today and provides three reason of support. The professor, however, expresses that more research is needed to prove the benefits of dams and also construction of dams pose major drawbacks that the author did not consider. He casts doubts on the arguments made in the article by opposing each of them.
First, the reading claims that dams have positive impacts on the environment. The professor refutes this point by avering that the environment suffers from dams. He mentions that during the construction of this structures the water must be diverted which pose a great difficulty for migrating fish. THe professor adds that after dams are finished, the the water flows slower than before which in turn affects the process of laying fish eggs and reproduction of fish negatively.
Second, the article posits that the power generated from a dam produces no harmful pollutants. The professor, by contrast, asserts that dams create artificial lakes that not only leads to death of dense vegetation but it releases a global warming gas named methane. Dams also destroy plant life which remove carbon dioxide naturally.
Third, the reading argues that dams create no financial burden for the community. The professor debunks this claim by declaring that people suffer financial issues caused by dams. As mentioned before, dams create enormous artificial lakes that leads to local residents relocation which is not cheap practice. He states that dam construction would not be feasible without government aid which is collected by people taxes.
