Overall, it is clear that the majority of trips taken in 2009 stemmed from commuting to and from the workplace. Meanwhile, the most common issue among travellers is the high price of travel.
In 2009, nearly half of all trips of people in the US were commutes, whereas almost one in five trips were for personal reasons. 16% of all trips were for shopping, and one out of ten trips were for social or recreational purposes. The least common reason for travel among Americans in 2009 proved to be friend or family visits, causing only 6% of trips.
At 36%, the high cost of travelling emerged as the most popular problem among travellers, as common as the next two popular issues, concerns about safety and hot-tempered drivers, combined. Highway congestion was also a significant cause for concern, as noted by 14% of the general public. Access for public transport users and pedestrians saw the least attention, also totalling 14%.
