The bar graph given illustrates the number of houses percentage wise that were either in rented or owned accommodation from 1918 to 2011 in England and Wales.
Overall, it can be observed that the households that were in rented accommodation experienced a decrease in their numbers over the given period of 93 years. Whereas those of the households in owned accommodation experienced a steady rise ultimately decreasing by a slight percentage in the end.
In 1918, the percentage of houses that were rented was the highest at around 78%, whilst that of the houses owned was comparitively very low at about 22%. This trend, where there is a relatively larger difference in the percentage of houses owned and rented can be observed till 1961, where households rented were at about 59% and those owned were at about 41%.
In the year 1971, households both owned and rented were exactly at 50%. From then on, the number of houses that were rented experienced a steady growth, with the highest percentage being approximately 69% in 2001 and finally reducing to around 64% in 2011. Contrary to this, the households that were rented experienced a decrease in its numbers with its lowest point at about 31% in 2001 and slightly increasing to about 36% in 2011.
