The reading and the lecturer are both about the practical solutions to prevent the extinction of frogs. The author of the reading feels that the extinction of frogs can threaten the human population because they eat disease-carrying insects. The lecturer challenges the claim made by the author. She says that these specific solutions are not practical to decrease the rate of extinction of frogs.
To begin with, the author argues that using pesticides by farmers is chemical, and pesticides can scatter to the frog habitats. In the article, it is said that it can affect their nervous system, and after a while, make problems for their breathing. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that farmers use these especial pesticides to do not lose their products. Additionally, she says farmers want to keep themselves in the competition to sell their products to companies. As a result, they use pesticides to hamper reducing the productivity of their fields.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the major factor in the decline in the frog population is a fungus which disperses around the world. It is stated that fungus causes thickening of the skin, and frogs need to absorb water from their skin, consequently, frogs die, because of the infection. The lecturer, however, rebuts on this by mentioning that it is difficult for researchers to prevent each frog to pass the lands, which fungus grows there. The lecturer elaborates on this by bringing up that all frogs' offspring have to pass the land in which fungus grows there.
Finally, the reading posits that frog populations are in decline because their natural habitats are threatened. The article said that frogs lay their eggs in the water, and they rely on water and wetland, which human activities destructed these lands. The lecturer's position is that their population has decreased because of climate changes in the world. She says that water and wetlands did not annihilate by human activities, but it is the climate change consequences.
