TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task

As it was stated in the reading passage, the author is of the opinion that humpback whales use stars to navigate through long distances that they migrate to. They provide 3 reasons to support their claim. On the other hand, the lecturer provides some arguments to refute their claim.

The first thing that the author noted is this specific kind of whale is intelligent enough to use stars for navigation in an attempt to justify their claim. On the contrary, the lecturer finds their idea lacking in terms of explanations. He asserts that there is no necessity to be any connection between intelligence and using stars as a means of navigation. To shed light on the issue, it has been proved that Ducks possess the ability to navigate according to stars' positions, nevertheless, they do not possess a high intelligence index. Therefore, there should not be any relation between ingenuity and using stars for the aim of navigation.

Another reason that the author provided was whales immigrating in straight lines and this is possible just when animals keep tracking an external object, which for whales is stars. Conversely, the lecturer finds the author's reasoning unconvincing. He mentioned that animals naturally use exotic objects for navigation. Scientists have revealed a study that indicates have some biomagnetic system in their brain which can sense the earth's magnetic fields and it is more likely that whales orient by the helping hand of their vulnerability to the earth's magnetic field rather than the stars.

As the last notion, the author emphasized by doing the behavior of spy-hopping they are in quest of stars’ position to navigate to their destination. Yet again, the lecturer refuses their idea. He noted that it is not relevant to the navigation. In order that sharks have this behavior too, while we know they do not migrate anywhere and just use the so-called behavior for the purpose of hunting.
