You are currently trying to improve your knowledge of a language which is not
your original language. You have a friend who speaks this new language
perfectly. Write to your friend,
Explaining why you want to learn this new language
Asking him / her for suggestions on who to learn more quickly
Proposing that you meet your friend to talk about these steps
Dear Tom,
I hope you're doing well and I'm sorry I've not written for so long. I'm writing about my interest in
learning Chinese in which you're highly proficient.
The main underlying reason that I want to be able to acquire Chinese is that this language is the
most sough-after one in the oil industry which I work in. This is because Chinese manufacturers
are the most internationally acclaimed players in the market, and if I have a good command of
their native tongue, I can have an advantage and find jobs with higher salaries.
Actually, I want you to let me know how I can learn this language at a higher pace. Is there any
book or specific dictionary that can facilitate the language acquisition process for me? Should l
enroll in any class that helps me during this process?
I have an idea you might like. Let's meet up next week in the downtown and pay a visit to the china
town located a stone's throw away from the university at which you study. Not only can we have
some traditional dishes of the Chinese restaurants that are there and enjoy their local cuisine, but
also we can have a talk about the methods that you're going to suggest.
Do keep in touch and let me know what you think. Thank you for your help.
All the best,
Shima
