Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would be impossible.First, atmospheric
The reading and the lecture are both about the possibilty of success of any attempt for human presence on Venus. The author of the reading feels that Venus's atmosphere is too extreme for a human to survive in spite of usinng any techlogy.
The lecturer challenges the claim made by the author. He is of the opinion that a floating station like ballon can eliminate each of the difficulties associated with Venus's atmosphere.
To begin with, the author argues that atmospheric pressure of venus is 90 time that of earth. The article mentions it is like 100 kg pressure per square meter and humen as well as space crafts are likely to be crushed by this pressure.
This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He describes that if the station is situated 50 KM higher in the atmosphere, the pressure is likely to be low there. Additionally, he reasons as the pressure there would be less extreme,
human won't crush there.
Secondly, the writer suggests that there is no reserved source of water in Venus. In the article, it is stated that there are only extreme elements like carbondioxider and sulfuric acid, so water and oxigens must be carried from earth.
The lecturer, however, refutes this by mentioning that clemical reaction of carbondioxider and sulfuric acid can be performed in the labs to produce oxigens and waters. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that as there
are abundant amount of carbondioxider and sulfuric acid in the Venus's atmosphere, it will provide enough oxigen and water. So, carrying them from earth would not be necessary.
Finally, the author posits that sunlight doesn't reach Venus's surface. Moreover, in the article, it is said that electricity needed to power the machines would not there to produce. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that if the station
is 50 KM high up the ground, it can get sunlight as it would above the cloud. He notes as the cloud refelcts sunlight too, stations will get sunligh both from above and bottom. So, power would not be an issue.
