The reading and the lecture are both about a painting known as portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet. while the author of the reading claim that this painting is not a work of Rembrandt. the authors gives three reasons for the claim, the lecturer however, challenges the reading by further addressing the issues brought up by the reading.
To begin with, the reading mention that there is inconsistensy about the women in the painting, she is wearing a servent cap and coat which has a luxurious fur collar. the author says that Rembrandt is known for his attention to details, the lecturer challenge this by stating that the fur collar were added after and in fact, the collar was painter over a simple white collar which is in cosistens with a servent clothing.
Secondly, the author expands by stating that since Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, those element do not fit togather in this painting. the face of the women in the painting is illuminated from below, which something is not possible whith the fur coller she had, this also accordaing to the lecturer is due to the addtiong of the collar after the original painting was completed, further more when experts erased the fur collar the light and shadows were in perfect fit as expected from a Rembrandt painting.
Finally, the reading posits that once the painting was examind from behind it turned out that it was painted on a wood panels that were gloued togather, something which is unusuall from Rembrandt. the lecturer howvere stated that the wood were added after, in fact, the original painting was painted on a single wood panel and later they found that the original panel came from the same tree of another painting from the same artist.
