The reading and the lecture are both about the purpose of existence of carves stones that were found in different areas of Scotland. The author in the text provides three theories about the usage of those carved stones. On the other hand, the professor in the lecture refuses each theory by stating some rational explanations.
First of all, the author mentions that they could be used as a hunting or fighting devices because there were found some holes or grooves on the surface of the stones. So, they were wrapped by strings to be used. The professor in the lecture challenges the idea by asserting that if they were used to be a hunting or fighting device they must be broken down and found in species. However, they are preserved well with no flake or species of the whole stones.
Secondly, the author in the lecture provides a theory which mentions that because all of the stones were found with the same diameter -70 mm- they must be used for measurement and weighing food or anything measurable. Whereas, the instructor claims that it is OK if their diameter is identical but each carved stones were made of different types of stone with different density so their weight is not the same to be used as a measurement device.
Finally, it is mentioned in the text that due to their adornments on the surface, they must be used for social purposes. On the contrast, the lecturer posits that some of the have intricated patterns of the surface however, some others are simple with no symbol. Therefore, they could not be used for social statues. Furthermore, she added that if they were used in this issue the famous people with had passed away must had this stones on their graves and stones of grave. So, these carved stones were not used in this purpose.
