The reading and lecture are both about decrease of body of yellow cedar. The author of the reading feels that the decline is effect of insects, bears and climate change. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that these explanations are not conclusive.
To start with, writer argues that cedar bark beetle attacks and harms the tree. However, this particular argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that yellow cedar is more resistant to small organisms than other trees because the tree is covered with toxic chemical substances which poison the insect. Additionally, he remarks explanation of the evidence can be interpreted by the attack of insects to dead part of the tree.
Secondly, the author suggests brown bears have caused detriment to the tree. In the reading passage, it is said that bears wilt the tree while eating the tree bark so that they feed on its sugar content. On the other hand, the speaker refutes this by mentioning that population of the trees are declining overally. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that number of the trees diminishing in the area in which there are no bears. To be more specific, even if there are no bears within some area, body of the trees will continue to decrease.
Finally, the author posits that climate change is influencing growth of the tree. Moreover, in the passage, it is stated that part of its roots are frozen because timing of growth has been changed. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that some trees are still dying even though it is in warm ecosystem. He notes that, since trees in warm zone are declining in number, temperature of the environment cannot play significant role in the decrease.
