The lecture and reading are both about threat of the zebra mussels. The reading states that this species might pose harmful effect as it caused difficulty some years ago. The lecturer refuted this by mentioning humans are much more informed than they were. Therefore, human being is able to prevent from this problem thanks to the gathered information.
To begin with, the author posits that zebra mussels can be glued to the ships and take advantage on the particular liquid that vessels utilize to balance freights. Nonetheless, this specific argument is refuted by the lecturer. He states that it will be no longer problem if removing this liquid and refilling with ocean water gets mandatory, and vessels which goes across ocean is capable of meeting this requirement. Thereby, the creature can be detached from the bottom of boats.
Secondly, the lecture contradicts with the idea that this creature may dominate the new habitat since they do not face any harm of natural predators. The lecturer, however, claims that this particular argument is arguably true only in beginning. Over time, birds recognize zebra mussels and relocate to an area where shellfish lives. Therefore, the birds will feed on the shellfish, which proves that the creature can not override other marine faunas for long period of time.
Finally, according to the reading, it is remarked that body of fishes will decrease in quantity in light of the shellfish. On the other hand, the lecturer notes that shellfish serves as prey for some marine creatures. For this reason, shellfish may benefit some species even though it occasion decline of fishes that utilizes plankton as their food.
