The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The diagram illustrates the steps involved in the production of electricity in a hydroelectric power station.
Overall, it is noticeable that water used in generation of electricity in the hydroelectric power station is recycled daily.
Firstly, water flows from the river into the high-level reservoir to be temporarily stored. Thereafter, during the day the dam is opened and water stored in the high-level reservoir flows out towards the power station. On reaching the power station water helps to activate the reversible turbines which in turn help to power the generator in the power station. Subsequently, the generator generates electricity which is distributed to the national grid via the power lines. At the same time, water flows into the low-level reservoir.
On the other hand, at night the water stored in the low-level reservoir flows in the opposite direction to how it flowed in the morning towards the reversible turbines. On reaching the turbines, the water is pumped back into the high-level reservoir to be used the next day for the production of electricity.
