The line graph illustrates the amount of cargo transferred by four different transport (road, water, rail and pipeline) in the UK over a course of 28 years starting from 1974. Units are measured in million tonnes.
Looking at the chart, it is clear that the transportation of cargo by all types of movement witnessed an upward trend with the exception of rail. Overall, at the end of the given period, road registered the highest amount of goods transferred of all four kinds of modes of transport.
In 1974, the cargo transported by water was shy of 40 million tonnes. This figure rose to about 65 million tonnes in 2002, an increase of approximate 25 tonnes in 28 years. A similar trend was seen in the transference of goods by road, which jumped from 70 millions tonnes to under 100 million tonnes between 1974 and 2002.
Likewise, there was a growth in the amount of goods transported by pipeline, which increased from only about 5 million tonnes in 1974 to over 20 million tonnes in 2002. On the other hand, the cargo transported by rail fluctuated, which stood at 40 million tonnes in 1974, hit a low at around 30 million tonnes but then reached at over 40 million tonnes in 2002.
